Shakespeare to Hiphop is the combined poetic and educational talents of literary performers Regie Gibson and Marlon Carey. Both have been featured on various TEDx events and have profound experience with literary and spoken word traditions that have shaped their mission: to help cultivate and nurture a love of words and an understanding of the power of language.
By embracing the traditions and foundations of the past and the best of the present, Shakespeare to Hiphop connects with students of all ages in ways that are literary, lively and fun.

Professional Biographies
Marlon Carey:
Marlon Carey is a Poet Educator Actor Communicator Entertainer. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in Creative Writing, from St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, NC. Carey has taught Poetry and Creative Writing workshops in schools for several years in the New England Area. Named “Best Hip Hop Poet” by the Cambridge Poetry Awards two years in a row, he has also been the Boston Cantab Lounge's "Grand Slam Champion" and the Lizard Lounge Boston’s “King.”
Marlon is a proud member of Providence-based poetry theatre ensemble, Brother’s Keeper. Carey has also been a producer and radio DJ on Off Tha Top, a radio show that has been running for over four years on 88.1FM Brown University’s BSRlive.com online radio station.
In theater, Carey has been in major plays such as The Sunset Limited, Topdog/Underdog and Shakespeare’s Othello, (in which he played the character Iago with great success). He has been in When Mahalia Sings, with Mixed Magic Theatre, Sortilegio with Brown University’s Rites and Reason Theatre, and Take Me Out with 2nd Story Theatre in Warren, RI.
Marlon has published three chapbooks: Giraffe Theory (2000), Prolegomenon (2003) and Lazarus (St. Andrews College Press, 2007). He has also released several EPs of music, which include poetry and hip hop tracks. His latest musical project is a Mixtape (currently untitled) that includes kid-friendly hip hop, (the song “cat leash” and a hip hop version of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” for instance) which he largely produced in his home studio.
Regie Gibson:

Literary Performer and educator, Regie Gibson, received his MFA from New England College. He’s lectured and performed in the U.S., Cuba and Europe. Representing the U.S., Regie competed for and received the Absolute Poetry Award in Monfalcone, Italy. Himself and his work appear in "love jones”: a feature-film based on events in his life. He is a former National Poetry Slam Champion, has featured on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, WBUR’s On Point, Radio Boston, and various other NPR programs. Regie has performed at TED X Boston, Ted X Bedford and TED X Natick, and has been nominated for a Boston Emmy.
He’s received the Walker Scholarship for Poetry from the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center and a YMCA Writer’s Fellowship. He’s been published in Poetry Magazine, Harvard’s Divinity Magazine, and The Iowa Review, among others. His volume of poems, “Storms Beneath the Skin”, has received the Golden Pen Award. He has received both an MCC Poetry Award and a Lexington Education Foundation Grant. Regie has performed with and composed texts for The Boston City Singers, The Mystic Chorale and Boston’s Handel+Haydn Society.
He performs regularly with Atlas Soul: a world-music ensemble, his own word-music ensemble, The Regie Gibson Project. He is also one half of the duo, Shakespeare to Hip-Hop: An education and performance vehicle integrating the performance and study of classical and modern texts into English curriculums.
